How to make money at home with your own website

There are many websites on the internet that make a lot of money. Many different people from all backgrounds make extra money from these websites while working from their home. If you want to know how to make money at home then I hope this article will give you a few ideas about what you can do with a website of your own.

The blogger's home office

Welcome to my office!

Blog sites are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to make money at home. Your goal for using a blog to make extra money from home is for the blog to become a trusted authority in your niche. There are many blogs online about a huge variety of topics. You’re competing with other blogs for visitor traffic in your niche. As your blog becomes a “trusted” authority site your blog posts will show up in search engine results.

People that are searching for topics related to your niche will find you and visit your site. So you want to create a blog around a particular subject, your niche. You’ll write useful and informative blog posts with extremely valued keywords. The keywords are what people are searching for. You’ll need to learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to create these kinds of blogs and for them to be successful.

Once you’re getting traffic to your blog you have an opportunity to make some money. A certain portion of your traffic will “convert”. This means that they click through the ads and links that you place throughout your site, complete your Call To Action (CTA), buy the product or service you’re offering or sign up for the program your talking about.

But since only a small portion of your traffic will convert, to really be successful you must have a large amount of traffic. That could be at least 10,000 pageviews per day. I think you should expect it to take at least six months, if not a year or more of really hard work to build and maintain that large of an audience. It depends on how much time you can put toward building the site and developing quality content. But you can do it.

Selling Ad Space

Once your blog has a large amount of traffic you may choose to sell space on your site to advertisers. They purchase this space through networks like Google’s AdWords or Taboola. Here’s how that works. An advertiser places their ad into the network and they bid on how much they’re willing to pay to have their ad seen or clicked. As a publisher, you offer ad space to the other side of the ad network. Google’s AdSense is an example of this.

You’re paid commissions when ads are shown on your site (impressions) or when visitors click the ads. The more impressions that you generate and the more clicks the ads on your site get, the more money you make selling ad space. So you’ll need a lot of traffic to make money with this method.

The amount you make can vary widely because there are so many variables. Way too many to cover here. But again it’s all related to how much traffic you get. The more visitors you have on your site the more valuable you are to advertisers.

Affiliate Marketing

Depending on what your site is about (your niche) there are many affiliate programs that you can sign up with and many offers you can promote on your site. Many affiliate networks or programs are free to sign up for. Depending on the type of products that you choose to promote, the product sellers give you a percentage of the sales that you make for their products. That’s your commission. Commissions can be percentages of the sale amount or a fixed amount. Commission percentages can vary widely, maybe 5% – 75% of the sale amount. More expensive products tend to offer higher commissions, but they’re also more difficult to sell and have smaller market opportunities.

Some of the most popular and easy to join affiliate networks are Clickbank, CJ Affiliate (formerly Commission Junction), and Rakuten Marketing. These networks have a huge amount of offers. Some are better than others. So you may have to try a few offers before you find a few that convert to sales.

Other affiliate networks like Ads 4 Dough (A4D for short), Peerfly, and Ad Similis have a more rigorous intake process and a more selective network of offers. To join these networks you need to have a plan on how you will use their networks to succeed. These networks make their money based on the volume of your commissions. If you make $500 in commissions they only make about $50. That hardly pays the salaries of the staff time that it takes to get up and running on their network. So they want to have some confidence ahead of time that you have a solid plan for success. Super-Affiliate Malan Darras has a great blog post about how to get approved for these types of affiliate networks. If you want to get into affiliate marketing and get into any of these networks, I suggest you Malan’s blog post, twice.

There are definitely many different ways you can make money at home on a website like you mentioned blogging, affiliate marketing is definitely two of the most common.

But selling ad space is new, is there any tutorial or training you have on how to do this? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks if you get back to me.

Using AdSense on a WordPress site is fairly easy. I’d like to create a tutorial on how to do it eventually, but in the mean time here’s a pretty good video from WPBeginner.

This sounds great – I got really excited just reading your post. I went to the Wealthy Affiliate program site that you mentioned and it says that I can join for free? I was just wondering how would that work and if you also did this when you first joined?

Also, how long have you been blogging for? It seems like it would be quite a challenge to come up with 10,000 visitors per day?

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I did join Wealthy Affiliate for free. But that only lasted 1 week before I upgraded to Premium.

I’ve been blogging for a few years at various levels. 10k hits per day is a challenge for sure. But that amount is what I think it would take to make some very serious money with a single site. It’s all about volume.

Let’s say that your average CTA (Call to Action) conversion rate is 1%. For 10k visitors that’s 100 conversions per day. Then let’s say that the average conversion is worth $5. Then you make $500 per day, or $182k per year! But it may be difficult to get that kind of traffic volume if you work alone. So you probably have 1 or more staff that you have to pay, or perhaps you contract some of that out.

So the amount of traffic needed to really make good money will vary according to your average conversion value. Let’s say you work solo and you want to make $100k per year. Let’s also assume that your average income per conversion is $10. To make $100k you need 10,000 conversions in 1 year. That’s about 27 per day. If your conversion rate is 1% then you need about 2700 hits per day. So it’s all relative to your offers, conversion rate, and income goals.

    Hi Darrel
I found your content to be extremely helpful and informative. I am currently looking into for options on drop-shipping as a business and I can tell from all my research that ANYTHING one does online requires and investment of time, if nothing else. But I do believe that through hard work, staying positive and consistent effort, the rewards will pay off. Thanks for a great article!
    Warm regards,
